Precious metals markets entered this week by falling through the bottom of their recent trading ranges.

That’s after gold, silver, and platinum managed to post small gains last week with volatility muted despite the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement.

Fed officials reiterated their commitment to lifting the inflation rate. They also telegraphed the continuation of zero interest rate policy through 2023.

Meanwhile, the upcoming battle to replace the late Supreme Court justice and liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg has already inflamed partisans and raised the stakes for the election. President Donald Trump is likely to nominate a new Supreme Court justice this week, setting up a highly contentious confirmation fight.

Intensifying acrimony on Capitol Hill diminishes the odds of a bipartisan stimulus package being ironed out, which could weigh on Wall Street and economically sensitive commodities.
